I am Debbie Nickless. I live in Bridgewater, Massachusetts with Mr. Boomer, my rescue cat. I was first diagnosed with CCL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia) in the 1980s, I was in my early 30s. I had two brain tumors in the ‘90s. As I continue to battle CLL, I say “I have cancer, but CANCER does NOT have me.”
I participated in my 1st Relay For Life in 2001 as a survivor and support person for a co-worker’s mother. Since 2002, I have been a member of the ELT family. I have traveled to Relays throughout my Northeastern region (one on skis – so FUN), Florida, Ohio, Idaho and New York. I see uniqueness at each relay; however, they all have a common goal – to end cancer.
I gravitate to the youth at relays, whether they are a cancer survivor or a participant. I believe the cures will come from these young people. I relay because I NEED to support the endless research, to advocate for those that cannot, and to make sure the cures are found for future generations.
Before my diagnosis, CANCER was a scary word to me. As a survivor and a warrior for others, now when I hear the word “cancer”, I immediately want to share information about the invaluable resources offered through the American Cancer Society – from websites, discussion boards, support teams, a cancer hotline and more.
I enjoyed a 50-year career as a master cake decorator which allowed me to meet people from around the world. I am a “shenanigator” who LOVES to do good for others and spread cheer every day. Every day, my goal is to make 5 people smile and make 2 people laugh.
I believe that as we work together to find cures, we will one day celebrate a world without cancer.
